1916 Walking Liberty

First minted in 1916 the silver Walking Liberty half dollar spanned a 30 year production period. Classic in design, in keeping with other coinage of the time, this half dollar is generally accepted as one of the most beautiful silver coins to come from the U.S. Mint. Adolph Weinman, who had studied under sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, had become widely recognized as a great sculptor in his own right and in addition to the Walking Liberty half dollar also designed what has become known as the Mercury dime. In general the new half dollar was well accepted by the public but there was some dissent and criticism as there is with anything new.

During 1916 this beautiful half dollar was produced at Philadelphia, 608,000 coins minted, Denver, 1,014,400 coins minted and San Francisco with 508,000 coins minted. There is no mint mark for coins produced in Philadelphia. Mint marks for those produced in San Francisco and Denver are on the obverse, the heads side, for coins released from Denver and San Francisco. Beause it is a relatively high relief strike it was troubled through the years with incomplete or weak strikes particularly in the lines of libertys skirt, left hand and hair on the obverse and the Eagles feathers on the reverse.
