1917 Walking Liberty Half Dollar

It was a year of great change and upheaval for America. The U.S. entered the war, World War I, against Germany and the entire country was mobilized for the wartime effort. The 1917 Walking Liberty also went through its first major change when F.J.H. von Engelken ordered the mint marks to be moved from the obverse to the reverse. The change to the coins was not carried out until later in the year when new Director of the Mint Raymond T. Baker issued the order in writing on April 14, 1917.

The coins were produced during 1917 with mint marks on both the obverse and reverse. Philadelphia minted 12,292,000 Walking Liberty half dollars. Denver produced 765,400 with the mint mark on the obverse and 1,940,000 showing the mint mark on the reverse. San Francisco minted 952,000 coins with the mint mark on the obverse and 5,554,000 with mint marks on the reverse of the coin.
