1918 finds "The War to End All Wars", World War I, proceeding at fever pitch. The deadly Spanish Flu outbreak begins that will eventually take the lives of millions around the world. And the small town of Codell, Kansas is hit by a tornado for the 3rd time on the same day, May 20th, in 1916, 1917 and 1918. Thankfully World War I ends with the signing of the armistice agreement on November 11, 1918.
George T. Morgan, Assistant Engraver, attempted to improve the striking ability of the Walking Liberty coins by modifying the lines of Liberty's gown at her throat. The attempt proved unsuccessful and the coinage remained unchanged until 1936. The Philadelphia mint produced 6,634,000 half dollars, Denver minted 3,853,040 and San Francisco produced 10,282,000 of the coins.
