1923 Walking Liberty

The 1923 Walking Liberty half dollar is unique. It was only produced at San Francisco with 2,178,000 half dollars minted. No half dollars were produced at either Philadelphia or Denver and no Walking Liberty halves were produced in 1922. While new dies were used it is difficult to find fully struck gems. Circulated pieces in AU grade or better are scarce. Why the scarcity? Legitimate business is still slow while the bootleggers make money hand over fist in the illegal alcohol trade. President Warren Harding dies in office and is succeeded by Calvin Coolidge.

The 1923-S is one of the show stoppers when attempting to put together a mint state collection of Walkers. Weak strikes are typical of the coin particularly Miss Libertys left hand on the obverse and the Eagles breast feathers on the reverse.
