1936 Walking Liberty

Production of the Walking Liberty half dollar continues at a great pace. It was also the first year of a proof version with some 3,901 minted. Heat waves grip the United States as the Olympics in Berlin open and Jessee Owens wins the Gold Medal in the 100 meter dash. Hoover Dam is completed in Nevada and Franklin Roosevelt is elected to a 2nd term as President in an overwhelming landslide over opponent Alf Landon, Kansas State Governor.

Philadelphia takes the lead in production with 12,614,000 coins produced, Denver mints 4,252,400 and San Francisco produces 3,884,000 of the silver halves. All of these coins are widely available in mint state condition though the 1936-S can be a bit tougher and more expensive. Similar problems as have plagued all Walkers are weak strikes, particularly from both Denver and San Francisco. Many varieties from all 3 mints are known to exist.
