1938 Walking Liberty Half Dollar

For 1938 the Walking Liberty half dollar received a new hub with enhanced details on the obverse. Proof versions were again released with 8,152 produced. President Roosevelt established the March of Dimes and Action Comics introduced its first Super Hero, Superman, in Action Comic #1. The Philadelphia mint produced 4,110,000 silver halves but none were minted in San Francisco. While many of these half dollars have been melted over the years its not hard to find mint state versions, even in high grades, at relatively reasonable prices.

The 1938-D has become one of the most sought after of the Walker half dollars. It is one of the harder key dates in this series to find in mid to high mint state grades at reasonable prices. Only 491,600 were produced at the Denver mint. It is the third lowest mintage trailing only the 1921-D and 1921-P in numbers produced. Even those in only Good condition are typically over $100.
