1939 Walking Liberty Half Dollar

Walking Liberty half dollars are back up to moderate production and 8,808 proofs were made for that year. It was a year of firsts and a year of massive upheaval around the world. Batman made his first appearance, "Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck is published and women can purchase their first pair of nylon stockings when they go on sale for the first time in Wilmington, DE. 1939 also marks the beginning of World War II when Germany invades Poland. The Walkers from Philadelphia are easily available in mint state grades and are often used as examples of well struck coins.

The Philadelphia mint produced 6,812,000 coins, Denver created 4,267,800 and San Francisco created 2,552,000 of the silver halves. While San Franciscos addition was not as high as the other 2 mints they are available in well struck, mint state grades with only a slight premium over the others.
