1940 Walking Liberty

While the Walking Liberty half saw a mintage of 9,156,000 coins from the Philadelphia mint it is the least common of Walkers minted in the 1940s. Proofs were also minted with 11,279 produced. Denver produced no silver halves during the year.

World War II is encompassing more of the global community even as the U.S. tries to maintain its neutrality. Elmer Fudd is
introduced to the world in "Elmer's Candid Camera." The 1940-S is a bit more difficult to find in mint state grade even though 4,550,000 were produced at the San Francisco facility. Strikes are notoriously weak and though you will find coins being graded at MS65 it very difficult to find one with full details. Needless to say in mint state grades above MS64 this has become an expensive coin to find.
