1942 finds the U.S. on a full war footing and production of the Walking Liberty half dollar is ramped up to new highs. This was the last year for proof versions of the Walker to be produced with 21,120 be minted. But finding a well struck one is difficult due to poor handling and less than perfect strikes.
The Philadelphia mint produces 47,818,000 coins, Denver 10,973,800 and San Francisco creates 12,708,000 of the silver half dollars. Poor strikes due to using dies too long and improper striking pressures dominate those released from San Francisco. The same problems plague both Philadelphia and Denver coins but to a lesser degree and are more widely available in mint state grade. Several varieties of the coins are well known.
