1943 Walking Liberty Half Dollar

1943 sees the highest mintage of all years for the Walking Liberty half dollar. The U.S. is in full swing in the war effort and finds troops all over the world. The longest running stage show in Broadway history begins when "Oklahoma" plays for the first time. President Roosevelt becomes the President to travel by plane and Rosie the Riveter by Norman Rockwell appears for the first time on the cover of the "Saturday Evening Post."

Philadelphia mints an incredible 53,190,000 silver halves, Denver 11,346,000 and San Francisco produces 13,450,000 of the silver coins. The half dollars from Philadelphia show good strike and eye appeal for the most part. Denvers are about the same but problems for the San Francisco issue continue with weak strikes beingtypical. Finding the Walker in mint state grades is not difficult but those from San Francisco with good strikes bring a premium. Partly because of the increased production of the silver half more varieties are found.
