1945 Walking Liberty Half Dollar
1945 continues to see a relatively high production of the Walking Liberty half dollar compared to its first 3 decades. President Roosevelt dies in office and is succeeded by Harry Truman. President Truman is left with ending the war and gives approval for the use of nuclear weapons against the Japanese in order to end the war.
Philadelphia produces more Walking Liberty halves than the previous year, 31,502,000 of the coins, Denver 9,966,800 and San Francisco mints 10,156,000 silver halves. As in the few previous years of the 1940s coins in mint state grade are generally available from the Philadelphia mint but well struck uncirculated examples are less well known. Weak strikes are typical and several varieties can be found.
