1946 Walking Liberty Half Dollar
American GIs are streaming home to the U.S. after the war and rebuilding begins in earnest around the world. Production of Walking Liberty half dollars is reduced sharply in the aftermath of the wartime effort. The United Nations met for the first time this year and a staple of U.S. kitchens is sold for the first time, it's called Tupperware.
This is the next to last year for production of the Walking Liberty half dollar. Philadelphia produces 12,118,000 including a very well know doubled die reverse variety. Denver mints 2,151,000 Walkers and San Francisco mints 3,726,000 silver halves. Several varieties from both Denver and San Francisco are known, including doubling and die-cracks. 1946 is the last year the Walking Liberty half dollar is produced at the San Francisco mint.
