1947 Walking Liberty Half Dollar

The last year for production of the Walking Liberty half dollar brings great hope for those weary from the war effort. The U.S. economy is growing and the first of the baby boomer generation have arrived. As life begins to return to some kind of normalcy after the years of war it's time for the Walker to take its last bow.

Production is low for the year with Philadelphia producing only 4,094,000 coins and Denver adding only 3,900,600 silver half dollars. Because it was the last year many of these silver coins were saved and its not uncommon to find full rolls and many individual coins in mint state uncirculated grades. Denver minted coins do come at a premium for well struck coins as problems with weak strikes continued even in its last year.

For 30 years the Walking Liberty half dollar was the circulating half dollar coinage of the U.S. It served the country well through 2 world wars, massive social change, a devastating world wide recession and the beginning of the nuclear age and cold war. It has become one of the most popular and most collected U.S. silver coins. And occassionally, one still shows up in the cash drawers of retailers around the country.
